In 1969 Pontiac released a special option package called "The Judge"
named after a popular routine off a comedy show of the time. "Born Great"
was the company slogan used for 1969 GTO "The Judge". It was designed to be
what Car and Driver called an "econo racer". It was a well-loaded muscle car
with a price that gave you a lot for your money! It was a machine that you
could take racing, pretty much "as is" for a lot less money than a
purpose-built race car cost.
At
first, "The Judge" came only in bright orange know as Carousel Red with tri-colour
striping, but it was later made available in the full range of GTO colours.
Special standard features of the package included a blacked-out grill,
Rally
II wheels minus trim rings, functional hood scoops. "The Judge" decals on
the sides of the front fenders and "Ram Air" decals on the hood scoops. At
the rear there was a 60-inch wide floating deck lid airfoil with a "The
Judge" decal emblem on the upper right-hand surface. What really interested
car fans was what hardware came with the package; a 366 bhp,
400
cubic inch V8 Ram Air III engine and a 3.55.1 rear axle, perfect for taking
up the strip. These cars were capable of low 14 second quarter mile in stock
condition! "The Judge" option was added to 6,725 GTO hardtops and only 108
GTO ragtops.
This car was originally purchased from Porter Pontiac in Denver,
Colorado, in 1969. In September, 1990 It was purchased from Stanford
Pontiac, Cadillac of Jackson, Michigan, by a fellow named Jim Helps of
Ontario, Canada. Who spent the next six years restoring it. It was completed
in 1997. To date it has less than 250 miles on it since its restoration. It
was purchased in September 2003 by Daryl Carter of Penticton, B.C. Canada
and it now resides in his private collection.
